The Narrows
By Eric Winkler
The Yellowstone River thunders through the narrowest part of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone at Calcite Springs. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Water, calcium and sulfur from the volcanic fracture zone stains the canyon wall as the river slices towards the North entrance to the park at Gardiner, Montana. On a moody, damp day like this, the river takes on a deep emerald hue, and steam rising through hydrothermal becomes visible (seen in the middle left of the frame if one looks closely).
